We first met as kids playing slo-pitch on a team coached by both our dads. We didn’t go to the same school, but every summer from ages 8 to 16, the ball field brought us back together. Even when we were supposed to sit in batting order, we always found a way to sit beside each other. One night after a game, Mackenzie’s mom remarked, “Those are the kinds of people you grow up to marry.” Mackenzie, of course, replied with a very firm “Ew” (even though she secretly felt her mom might be onto something). After dating in high school and drifting apart, we eventually found our way back to each other, older, wiser, and still on the same team. Life has changed a lot since those summer evenings at the park, but one thing has always stayed the same: we’ve never stopped finding our way back to the same spot on the bench, right beside each other.
