How It All Began

4.27.19

While there could be many places to start this story, let's begin when Diego asked me to prom. He had been discussing 'promposal' ideas with me for weeks, but secretly, I just wished he would ask me. So when one night before a HSM bible study, I walked in to Diego holding a poster and a stuffed animal, I was very surprised! After that, our friendship grew deeper. We attended 7am daily Mass before school for 45 days in a row together. Yes, we kept count. Now it was not until months after that we officially started dating, but we had been sure of each other for a while. Then came four years of long distance, traveling to see each other and arranging weekends to come home. Now that I'm in my last year of school, I cannot believe we only have months of long distance left before we never have to say goodbye like that again. - Mackenzie I met Mackenzie during my senior year of high school. I joined the same small group as her at our church. After a few months, I started to realize how amazing Mackenzie is. At this point she and I didn't know each other well. I remember thinking I really wanted Mackenzie to be a part of my life after I graduated but I recognized that we weren't very close yet. I started planting the seeds of prom because I thought we'd have to talk a lot more if we were going to prom together. Fortunately, I was right. By the time prom came around, I was obsessed. Shortly after that, we began dating. We dated long distance 4 years after that, but it didn't take nearly that long for me to know that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. - Diego

The Proposal

5.19.23

St. Ann's was always a special for our relationship. It really didn't take much consideration for me to decide that was where I wanted us to get engaged. Because we had dated for a while, we had already discussed our timeline, so Mackenzie was aware that we would get engaged that summer. I knew I wanted to surprise her, so I planned it to be only a week into the summer. I had to work quickly to get everything planned. Fortunately, everything fell right into place and I arranged for the special day. I managed to surprise her twice that day. First with the proposal, and then by having some of her best friends surprise her at a celebratory dinner. It was a perfect day! - Diego Once I had gotten home for summer vacation, a friend who works at St. Ann reached out to me to photograph a conference happening at church. This seemed like a usual request. When I arrived, we walked to the courtyard area where I then saw Diego standing next to the fountain. I immediately knew what was about to happen. As I struggle to hand her all my belongings, my heart rate starts to quicken as I make my way to him. In all honesty, I only remember parts of what he said, my whole body was shaking with excitement! When he popped the question, there was absolutely no hesitation, so much so that I was like "yeah duh!" I never thought to rehearse my response to his proposal. St. Ann is a second home for us and is the most important place to our relationship. It is where we met, grew in friendship, grew our romantic relationship, deepened our faith, and found a community. It's now where he proposed, where we'll get married, celebrate our wedding, and raise our children one day. - Mackenzie We cannot wait to share this special place of Heaven on Earth with you all soon!
