The Proposal

September 30th, 2018

Her Side of the Story

In previous years, we played music with some friends for Ciderfest at Diehl's apple orchard. This year they asked us to join them again. I picked out some of my favorite songs and a couple we had already been working on. I played the guitar and sang while Christian played the mandolin. The last song we did was "Everything" by Michael Bublé (https://youtu.be/soMQ4wQ8-3s - link to lyric video). During the last line of the song, out of the corner of my eye, I saw him drop his mandolin. I was a little confused but didn't thing too much of it. Then I realized that he wasn't singing the same words as me anymore either. At this point I shot him a "what on earth are you singing" look and still continued. Before I could comprehend what was actually going on I saw him pull out a little red box, get down on one knee, and open it. I then realized that he had changed the words to "Alyssa Marie Huff will you be my wife". I was so shocked I didn't know how to respond and found myself down on the ground hugging him and trying to hold the tears of joy back. I did finally get the words to say "Yes" loud enough for everyone to hear.

His Side of the Story

Alyssa always thought that I wouldn't be able to surprise her with my proposal. I can't say I wasn't worried she would catch on, she somehow has a sixth sense about surprises (particularly if she's the one being surprised). I wanted to propose in a way that Alyssa could feel like it was just her and I in that one precious moment, while simultaneously giving our families and close friends an opportunity to be part of a big step in our lives. Originally the plan revolved around me proposing at my last piano recital. However, due to the timing of the whole thing I had to hatch a new plan. I started thinking, "How could I get a bunch of people we know involved without giving Alyssa the slightest hint?" When we were invited to play at Diehl's Apple Orchard as part of their annual Ciderfest, ideas began rushing in to my head. I had never told Alyssa what song I was playing for the piano recital. I thought, if I could get her to sing it with me at Ciderfest, she would never see it coming and I could dedicate the song to her the way I wanted to. I loved the lyrics and always felt that they did a good job of describing to her how much she means to me. Excited to sing Michael Buble's Everything, Alyssa and I practiced our parts over and over. I'll admit, of the three songs we performed that day, I had urged more practice for this one. Not because it wasn't going well, but because I was insanely nervous! On the car ride to the orchard I was shaking and my stomach was doing backflips. Finally, when both my families were present and we were ready to play, it was like time slowed down. One song after another, and my nerves weren't getting any better. We began the last song, Everything. I knew that I would get her attention the minute I sang something other than the lyrics. When the time came, instead of the final words written in Michael Buble's Everything, I sang the question I had been wanting to ask her for a long time. "Alyssa Marie Huff, will you be my wife?"

Our Story

September 2014

From the very beginning we knew God had orchestrated our relationship and that it was meant to be. We aren't going to share all of the details but the timing of us meeting couldn't have been more perfect for either of us. We met in 2014, our senior year of high school at West Highland Christian Academy. It was my first year at a "real school" after being homeschooled my whole life but he had been there since 6th grade. We met in our first hour class and became friends quickly and then more than friends, and then we fell in love. Christian finally got the courage to ask my parents for permission to date me and then on the day of our senior prom my parents gave us the okay to date. Fast forward 4 years and we are even more in love than ever before. The relationship we have is not without its hardships and bumps in the road but we are so happy with how we've grown together during this journey and for our future together. We are so excited to share our special day with you!
