Our Story

by Lydia

Senior year of high school, I interviewed for Wheaton College with my admissions counselor. She was easy to talk to, and I came away from our conversation feeling confirmed that Wheaton was the place for me. During our conversation, she mentioned that her brother was going to be in my grade at Wheaton! I didn't think much of it at the time. A few months later, it was freshman orientation accompanied by a flurry of girls and boys meeting. A friend of mine showed me some pictures of this one guy (I remember one of him in a white suit with a cardinals tie), but I didn't think much of it at the time. Our friend groups began overlapping over the course of freshman year, but somehow we don't remember actually meeting. We do remember our first one-on-one conversation the summer after freshman year when we were camp counselors together, riding in the back of Ted's truck up at HoneyRock. Fast forward several months, and we started finding one another quite often studying in Lower Beamer, where we'd end up just talking the whole time. By spring of sophomore year, our friendship evolved into a major crush that neither of us would admit for a while, but I thought about him almost all the time. We started officially dating in December of 2017 which was clearly years in the making. Caleb was patient and persistent during those two years in between and I'm thankful to God that he was! He is my dearest friend and the best man I know. As we enter our marriage, we are thankful for the love and support we have from family and friends. Can't wait to celebrate this September!

From winning the Hamilton ticket-lottery for our third date to rekindling our relationship over a 2am FaceTime call from an avocado farm in Chile, we've always kept our closest family and friends on their toes. We both seek to be faithful to the Lord's plans, and thankfully, those plans have brought us to making a wedding website together! It's been quite the road to us get to this point, here's the timeline: Fall 2014 - Meet at Wheaton College and hang with the same "Crew" Summer 2015 - Camp Counselors together at HoneyRock Camp. Actually become friends. April 2016 - I ask her on our first date January 2017 - We go on our first date (do the math...) December 20th, 2017 - Officially begin dating (this was shortly after the avocado farm) December 29th, 2018 - She said "for sure" There are countless stories in those 4+ years of friendship that have led us to falling in love and agreeing to keep being best friends for the rest of our lives. As we approach September 1st, we look forward to celebrating the journey thus far with you and looking forward to where God leads us in our life together. For those who don't yet know Lydia Grace Sohmer: Lydia has the super power of being the sweetest girl I've ever known, but also the strongest. She knows the right questions to ask whether in conversation with me, a 3 year old boy, or an 85 year old grandmother. She is disciplined and driven as a nursing student, loyal friend, and child of God. She's a world-class singer and always down for a game night. Thank you for the role that you have played in our lives thus far, and you'll always be welcome for a cup of coffee or to get schooled in Settlers of Catan or Avalon. Love y'all!
