The first time Luis encountered Bella's enchanting energy was at an audition in college. He was in a room full of directors who were casting for several plays. He was struck by the sound of her voice and the depth of her spirit. Isabella didn't get cast that day but not for lack of talent. In the eyes of those directors, she didn't get cast because she wasn't "right for the part.” Luis was so taken by her performance that he felt compelled to speak with her after the audition. All he wanted to say to her was that she had been "seen," that somebody had noticed her effort. He introduced himself to her and said a few positive comments about her acting. He claims to this day this was NOT a pickup line. He just wanted her to know she had done a good job and that the other directors didn't see what he saw. Luis told Isabella that her voice resonated with the sound of her life experiences and that he could tell she had had some challenging times. Isabella, defiant as ever said, "You don't know me, you don't know anything about me!" And then Luis with his soulful eyes said, "Just as you can hear the sound of my voice is how I know." Isabella could feel his words ringing true, deep inside of her. She felt as if his words had unlocked a part of her that had never been seen. It was as if no one had ever spoken to her before. As if no one had ever truly heard her. Isabella left that conversation a different person. She went into the dressing room where other actors were getting ready for a show and asked, "Who is that guy Luis Guerrero? Is he young like you guys?" "No, they said, he is your age" Isabella then said, "So he's married?" "No, they said he is not" "Ah! Isabella finally said, "Then he must be gay!" "Absolutely not!" they all chimed in while putting on their makeup. So, in that moment Isabella announced,.. "I am going to marry that man!" That fateful day in the halls of Cal State Fullerton marked the beginning of a challenging and beautiful relationship. They raised Victoria while going to undergrad, graduate school and stayed together for over 9 years. But being the fiercely independent types, they separated. Luis & Isabella would get back together every few years, but even though they loved each other very much, love was not enough. The thing is their friendship never waned. They never lost their connection. In 2020, while the world was losing its mind, Luis and Isabella came back together. They made a commitment to never part again. They committed to resolve all their conflicts with kindness, love and compassion. And finally, they made the biggest commitment of all... TO GET MARRIED!!! Luis had always envisioned proposing to Isabella in some romantic setting such as a tropical island, under the Eiffel tower or after a long hike at the top of a mountain. But that’s not what happened. Instead, he found himself at a flea market in Long Beach, CA shopping for a dresser to artistically convert into a bathroom vanity. Instead, he bought a brass buddha, a piece of original art and an antique diamond ring. The rest is history. The moral of this story: Shit or get off the pot. You can’t keep getting the milk for free. You eventually have to buy the cow! Life is short. Love the one you’re with. Marry your best friend because they are just as nuts as you.
