We met our freshman year of college at UW Madison. Somehow, we both ended up in a big group of friends primarily comprised of fellow Minnesotans. It turned out we grew up 30 minutes from each other, but it took moving 4 hours from home for our paths to finally cross. During our sophomore year, we were both in the same physics class and began studying together. When the entire campus had to move home for COVID, we continued studying together. Ethan slowly began pulling his moves - letting Lucy use his Chegg account, showing up in his Mom's convertible and offering a drive as a study break, and asking Lucy to watch one of her favorite movies (The Princess Bride). All of Ethan's tricks eventually worked, and we started dating in May of 2020! Since then, we have had countless adventures together. We have traveled thousands of miles on road trips, got a dog, graduated from undergrad and then graduate school, moved back to Minnesota, played hundreds of board games, explored 10 National Parks, and finally got engaged!
We got engaged on June 30th, 2024, on top of Angel's Landing in Zion National Park. If you are not familiar, Angel's Landing is ranked one of the most terrifying hikes in the United States. The day we embarked on our hike, there was a high of 105 degrees, and barely any clouds in sight. Our friend Jacques was along for the adventure as well - who has a notable fear of heights. Throughout the hike, Ethan was being EXTRA supportive and encouraging that we make it to the top. Once we finally made it, all Lucy wanted to do was sit down, eat a well-deserved sandwich, and have some water. Ethan however, made her go to the very edge to take pictures. Lucy was in the middle of taking a picture of the view when she turned around to see Ethan getting down on one knee! Jacques, who did in fact make it to the top despite his fears, recorded the whole thing. A small group of other hikers cheered us on and congratulated us, making the moment even more special. The hike back down was a breeze, riding the high of being freshly engaged. After the adrenaline wore off, however, Lucy was struggling with a bad case of heat exhaustion. What was supposed to be a 4-day trip camping and hiking in Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks was cut short. But it was all worth it, and a trip we will never forget!
