Travel Note
We strongly suggest that any out of town guests fly into the San Diego International airport and either hire a driver or rent a car to drive the 90 miles (less than 2 hours) to Valle de Guadalupe. Please be mindful of wait times at the border on the way back into the U.S. so that you can make it back with plenty of time for your flight. More on that below.
Travel Note
Valle de Guadalupe is about a 90 minute drive from San Diego. When driving into Mexico, we recommend crossing the border at Tecate and taking Highway 3 South to the valle. The drive is more scenic and avoids the traffic and border wait times when entering through Tijuana/ San Ysidro. Google Maps will recommend the Tijuana route, but we highly recommend forgoing that itinerary for the Tecate Port of Entry. When heading North after the wedding, the Tecate Port of Entry border crossing tends to be MUCH faster than reentering California via Tijuana, as well.
Travel Note
First, make sure the rental car company you are looking at is allowing their cars to travel into Mexico. The process for renting a car that will be driven into Mexico is exactly the same as any car rental process. When picking up your car, just mention to the agent that you will be traveling to Mexico. They will provide you with the proper insurance for the car and you will be good to go! U.S. car insurance doesn’t cover you in Mexico. Rental car companies in San Diego will offer insurance for travelers crossing the border. You must tell them you are crossing the border so that they give you the correct policy options. If you’re driving your own car, buy a policy ahead of time from MexPro or speak with your insurance provider about their partners in Mexico. This is absolutely necessary for your protection, but will only take a few minutes to book online.
Travel Note
While getting into Mexico by car is quick and seamless at the border, returning to the U.S. after the wedding can sometimes involve anywhere from 30 minutes to multiple hours of traffic at the border. Please factor that travel time into your journey, especially if you are flying the same day that you’re crossing. We have learned from experience that there are a few things that can greatly reduce your border wait time: We recommend crossing back into the U.S. via the Tecate Port of Entry which is much, much faster than through Tijuana/San Ysidro. However, please don’t forget to factor the closing time into your return travel. If you choose to go through San Ysidro or another crossing, consider applying for expedited re-entry through Global Entry or SENTRI. SENTRI is the Global Entry equivalent for land crossings and there will be lanes marked SENTRI at the border when re-entering the United States. If all of the passengers in your car have Global Entry and/or SENTRI you can use this lane which will greatly reduce your crossing time. If you do have Global Entry or SENTRI, bring your card with you. Download the U.S. Customs “CBP Border Wait Times” app to see and compare wait times at the different border crossings. If you choose to drive the coast and travel into the U.S. via Tijuana, please factor long wait times at the border into your return travel.
