Reid and Lu met on the way to Oklahoma City for a Student Government Association Retreat. Although Reid initiated conversation, Lu returned home to tell her parents she and Reid would either get married or become best friends. They spent the next four years as a couple on Southeastern's campus and kept their relationship strong from 300 miles apart for almost two years.

Reid and Lu patiently waited five years for an engagement, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to wait a few more days. As the close of the semester occurred, Lu was informed that she would be quarantined for ten days prolonging Reid's plans. Once Lu was released from quarantine, Reid took her on a "graduation celebration" which ended in a proposal and family celebration--a perfect day for the both of them!
