Carolyn first laid eyes on Joseph when he walked into her church for the first time. She was 15 years old and he was 16 years old. After they became friends, they were inseparable. They were high school sweethearts although they went to different schools.

Carolyn and Joseph went to the Aquarium of the Pacific with some family. At the end of the day their cousins wanted to go to the Rainbow Lighthouse and take pictures. Although Carolyn suggested they skip that and go eat, they all insisted they needed to take pictures there first. They walked up to the lighthouse and started to walk around the lighthouse only to see familiar faces and hear one of Carolyn's favorite love songs (the song from "UP" the movie). At this moment Joseph proposed and she said YES!
