I worked on the UPS ramp in Salt Lake City, where I unloaded and loaded airplanes. Rodney was a Beech 99 Captain at the time. I never paid attention to the Beech 99 Captains because I knew they wouldn't stick around for long. They were usually there just to build hours to move onto an airline that flew jets. One evening, I was unloading a Beech 99 and Rodney approached me. He said that I reminded him of his daughter because she has red hair. I immediately replied "Aww! I've always wanted a red headed daughter!". Of course, I assumed he was married, so I continued on to unload the next aircraft. He later requested to be friends on Facebook. Shortly after that, I was walking to the building from the parking lot, where he drove up and offered to give me a ride to the building. That short conversation to the building hinted to me that he was single. He had also asked me how I managed going to work at 2am, as a single mother with a toddler. He was trying to figure out how to get his daughter in town, and go to work at the same time. I eventually sent him a message on Facebook with some ideas on how he could pull off going to work, and having his little girl in town. From there, we chatted a lot. Then he asked me on a date. I told him that I'd love to go on a date (after I asked his Chief Pilot what kind of an employee he was). After that, we fell in love very quickly, as we were both on very similar wavelengths. He was one hundred times what I was used to. Still, I wonder how we clicked so perfectly.
I had my eye on her for a while, but couldn’t quite figure out how to approach the situation. She was always working so hard and moving with a purpose, any conversation I thought of having with her, would have likely slowed her down from whatever mission she was trying to accomplish. Usually after finishing my preflight, I would just sit inside the crew truck on the ramp and watch her from a distance, admiring how quickly and confidently she worked. I remember sitting in that F150 and telling Rick Tarrel, another Ameriflight Pilot, that I will ask her on a date one day. He smiled, then laughed and replied to me with: “What makes you think you’re good enough for her?” Mind you, Rick is one of the smartest people I’ve met in my life so far. He knew exactly what words I needed to hear to motivate me to talk to this lady who is obviously WAY out of my league. That night, I saw the perfect opportunity to just say a few words to her without taking up much of her busy time. She was unloading my Airplane with her crew. I walked up to her and said, “ Hey if you ever just see me stare at you, its because your hair reminds me of my little girl. She has red hair.” Cass smiled, she said a few words and moved on to the next Airplane completely unfazed by the conversation I tried starting with her. But, at least she knew I existed now. A few days later a saw another oppertunity to just talk to her for a few more seconds. She just pulled up in her Acura in the Airport parking lot. I was off work, so I offered to give her a ride to the front door of the building. She paused for a brief moment, and then jumped into my Honda Civic. I knew I only had 5 seconds with her, so I figured I’d ask her how she manages to be a single mom and have such a nice car. I didnt actually know if she was single or had any kids, but I figured she would have corrected me if I was wrong. I asked her for advice and from that point on, I knew this was going to go somewhere great.
