How We Met

William Shakespeare, Karaoke and a Fire Pit

If you ask Tom how we met, he will say “Henry IV, Part I”—one of William Shakespeare's history plays. It all started when Tom and I had the opportunity to work with our friends in the Britches and Hose 2017 production. Actually, if you ask Tom how long we've been together, he will start counting backwards all the shows that we’ve done together. As a performing couple, we mark our experiences together not by anniversaries, birthdays or holidays, but by each audition, tech week and curtain call. Tom and I have been lucky enough to build a life together where performance and artistic expression are the daily norm. In the beginning of our friendship before our first date, Tom and I would hang out after rehearsals. We'd stand in the parking lot of a community theater, talk about our days, the trials of living in a group house and the stresses of "adulting." We'd recount funny stories and talk for hours, cold and tired, before dragging ourselves to our cars with the realization that midnight wasn't far off. Parking lot conversations evolved into after-rehearsal karaoke at the Auld Shebeen, a nearby pub in Northern Virginia, and then one fall evening three years ago, we made plans to build a fire in my backyard fire pit that wasn't tied to a B&H rehearsal. We talked most of the night. Now, when people ask me how Tom and I met, I tell them credit belongs to William Shakespeare, karaoke and a fire pit.
