Flight
This is the best place to fly into. The airport is located on the mainland and across the lagoon from old Venice. There are a number of ways to get to the center of old Venice from here (see link above). The water taxis are about a 10-15 minute walk from the airport and are the easiest (though can be costly). Car taxis can be equally costly and lack the fun of arriving by boat. Venice is also easily reached by water shuttle (the Gold line is the express right to Piazza San Marco and is recommended) and by bus shuttle.
Train
If you are flying into Milan or Rome (or you are traveling around Italy before joining us in Venice!), the train is a very convenient way into old Venice. The train station lets you out in Venice on the other end of the Grand Canal from the main tourist attractions and most of the hotels we have named here, so you can easily hop into a water taxi and take the scenic route under the Rialto bridge to the center of town.
