Things To Do

Beaches

Beaches

Scarborough, ME 04074

Southern Maine has some of the best beaches in the world (in Louise's opinion). You really can't go wrong, but some popular family spots are: Scarborough Beach (biggest so least dependent on tides), Bayview/Ocean Park (closest to the house), Higgins (limited parking, best swimming), and Crescent Beach State Park (lots of parking, small fee). All the beaches will be busy on weekend days, so it's best to get there early or go later in the day - a family tradition is to go around 3 or 4pm for a glass of wine.

Portland Head Light

Cape Elizabeth, ME 04107

This is a quintessential Maine landmark, and the adjoining Fort Williams is also worth exploring.

Peaks Island

Peaks Island

Portland, ME

Peaks Island, accessible by a short ferry from Portland, is beautiful! There are beaches, places to eat, and the walk around the island is always one of the first things we do when welcoming new people to Maine. This photo is from Anders' first visit to Maine.

Walk from the Western Prom to the Eastern Prom

Eastern Promenade, Portland, ME 04101

The Eastern Prom is a popular spot in portland to picnic and has a small beach and a lovely view of the harbor. A fun way to see Portland is to walk from the western prom to the eastern prom via Congress street, down Exchange Street, and then to Commercial street.

Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park

ME

Located about 3.5 hours north of Saco, Acadia is definitely a bucket list Maine spot! Make sure to reserve a spot to watch the first sunrise in North America on the top of Cadillac mountain and grab an ice cream at Ben and Bills! Feel free to reach out for more recommendations!

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

105 Botanical Gardens Drive, Boothbay, ME 04537

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens are unbelievable beautiful, and home to several troll sculptures! Well worth a visit. Be sure to check out Popham Beach state park, located nearby, as well.

White Mountains

White Mountains

Lincoln, NH 03251

The white mountains are underrated for people new to New England for hiking and lakes! This area is well worth it and relatively less busy than Acadia. Reach out for recomendations!

Restaurants

188 State Street, Portland, ME 04102

Portland is known for it's restaurants, there's something for everyone! The location I chose is a family favorite- Pai Men Miyake (Louise worked there for two summers). Others include TBD. Make sure you get a reservation - it's a busy weekend in Portland.
