We both were beginning our Teach for America journey in the amazing city of San Antonio, TX. Matt was moving from Maryland and Kat was moving from Austin. TFA had placed all of the new members into small groups called “familias” and Matt was the first to sit down at our table. Kat was the second to sit down at our table and decided to sit one seat away. In our familias we shared our life stories and got to know each other pretty well. Later that night, we took yellow buses to a BBQ and on the way home Matt was sitting alone, typical, and this time Kat asked (if you know Kat, Matt would say she told him) to scoot over so she could sit down. We had our first conversation and we haven’t stopped sharing our lives together since.
March 27, 2017 was the first time Matt told Kat he loved her. She came home from teaching to a living room full of 100 post-it notes with reasons why he loved her. Jump to March 23, 2019, Kat went to a Women's Summit for Teach for America in San Antonio. When she got home Matt surprised her again with a living room full of 100 post-it notes, but this time with reasons why he wanted to marry her. After some happy tears, Matt got on one knee and Kat said yes!
