Rom-com to the max is the way Mel likes to describe it, or perhaps it's because of all the movies she indulged in as a child. They met in April of 2014, as Mel had just moved to Detroit for an internship, which happened to be at Nick's first job out of college. Mel tells the story as the first time she shook Nick's hand she laughed internally and said "Wouldn't it be chaotic if I marry this man one day" and scoffed it off. Nick thought she was really cute. And thus began the silliest relationship that office had seen. Mel was enamored by Nick, and she thought no one was funnier. Due to her over confidence Mel asked him out on what would be their first date at the Detroit Institute of the Arts followed by a lunch at Slow’s. A year later to the surprise of no one, these two kids in their early twenties did not work out. Mel moved to New York City to pursue her dream of comedy and Nick moved to his dream city of Chicago. During this time and with many “happy birthday’s”, “this made me think of you’s”, and “how have things been’s?”, they stayed friends as their connection never really ceased to exist. Four years apart but always friends, moving slowly back to each other without thought. Suddenly on a nice summer night, both respectively at their favorite local Irish pubs - Mel at the Four Faced Liar and Nick at Galway Arms - these two came up with the idea of reuniting one weekend for old time’s sake. Without hesitation Nick bought his Spirit flight (rip) to NYC and never looked back. That weekend couldn't have been more of a rom-com, between eating tacos on the steps of West 4th, pints of Guinness at the Liar, forcing Nick through a comedy show at the now defunct Slaughtered Lamb, and walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, they were both smitten. Nick's flight got cancelled as if the universe said just spend a few more days together. The connection only grew stronger and they texted every single day for six months, calls on the phone for hours, flights back and forth from Chicago to New York without hesitation, and never ending jokes. After two years of long distance, Nick moved to New York City and they got their first apartment in Bedstuy, where they would create a beautiful loving home and so many memories. Three years after that, they would move to Mel’s hometown of Miami. On a St. Patrick’s Day trip back to their old home of New York, they found themselves once again walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, just as they did in 2019, only this time with Nick asking Mel to marry him. And so the rom-com continues…
