How We Met

Fate

Lorrie had just moved to Portland and had become friends with Evan's friend group but they had never met- until the fateful evening of New Year's Eve 2016. As she sat on the sofa talking with a friend, she looked up to see a guy walk into the room. And she SWEARS this happened- an actual spotlight followed him as he walked through the living room saying hi to everyone he passed along the way. He was charismatic and had a stunning, innocent face. Realizing she had completely stopped mid-conversation, she became flustered. She thought to avoid awkwardness she would make fun of the guy saying, "Who invited the 12 year old?" She shared a laugh with her friend but still could not take her eyes away. He went outside and casually asked about the girl he saw sitting on the sofa. "She's Chris' girlfriend," someone incorrectly responded. "Hm. Good for him. She's hot." Evan casually replied. As a fun Greek tradition, there was a New Year's Eve cake at the party baked with a hidden quarter wrapped in foil. Whoever found the quarter in their slice would receive good luck for the upcoming new year. And low and behold, Lorrie's slice contained the much coveted token! Crossing paths in the kitchen, Lorrie and Evan introduced themselves and sparked up conversation. After a fun evening talking with Lorrie, Evan asked for her phone number and she obliged. Before leaving, she handed him the foil wrapped quarter saying "You can have my good luck for the year." With a puzzled expression, Evan took it and she walked away. The next morning Evan didn't know what to make of her. "I don't know about that girl. She gave me this lint trash foil thing from her pocket and I don't understand why. She's weird." Evan's friends laughed and explained the Greek New Year tradition to him. Full of relief, he laughed along with them. Maybe she wasn't too weird after all. He called and set up their first date. And the rest is history.

The Proposal

Tradition

Fast forward 3 years... After a fun night out celebrating the new year with friends, Evan and Lorrie headed home to celebrate with chocolate cake and champagne. Evan excitedly sliced the cake and gave Lorrie a piece. She found in her piece a round, foil "something". Remembering the Greek tradition from the night they met, she thought it was very sweet of Evan. And then he told her to unwrap the foil. She was confused, nervous and as usual, awkward. So Evan stepped in and unwrapped it for her, revealing the most beautiful ring she had ever seen. He got down on one knee and asked, "Will you have all my good luck for the rest of my life?" Lorrie was incredibly shocked and after asking if he was seriously proposing about a hundred times- she said YES!
