How We Met

We met in college, although for a while we disagreed if we met freshman year or sophomore year. Either way, we ended up in the same place one weekend with mutual friends. Over the years, conversations were easy and long, often talking for hours into the early morning. After graduating college, we kept in touch and continued to make the effort to drive over an hour either way to see each other when we could. In 2017, our relationship deepened as we stayed connected while separated over 6,000 miles. In 2018, we officially began our reasonably-distanced dating relationship and in 2019 we moved in together and have been living happily together ever since.

The Proposal

In February of 2021, we were scrounging for ideas of things to do this summer that would be fun regardless of the ongoing pandemic situation. When the topic of tenting came up, I put on my big girl pants and decided to lean in, even though I had never really gone camping. We proceeded to book 4 camping trips for the summer. The first trip we went on was to Camden Hills State Park. Upon arrival that Friday, we found out that there were hundreds of brown tail moth catapillars (which can cause significant skin irritation just from their hair) taking over our campsite. We brushed them off the picnic table and tent, and made the best of the weekend, even though they were quick to crawl up every surface. That Saturday, we got up and hiked Mt. Battie, which had gorgeous veiws at the top. We took in the view of the bay and then returned back to the campground. We then went into Camden and enjoyed an nice drink and snack by the water, and then again returned to the campground. Around 4pm, we were sitting by a fire and enjoying a nice conversation. Cameron then looked at me and began to say something, and then practically yelled at me to stand up. As I jumped up, there was a catipillar that had crawled up my chair about an inch from where my head was. As I moved it and sat back down, Cameron made a comment about how that had interrupted him. I asked what he was going to say and he said "I have a question for you". Classic me, with food always on the brain, responded with "is it about the burgers?". He said it was not about the burgers, and then let me know that he had something for me. He proceeded to get down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I asked him twice if he was serious, and then asked him about a million questions about the process. It was truly the perfect private moment for us to commit to the rest of our lives together.
