It was a Saturday night on campus - September 6, 2014. Lois had just started her sophomore year at Hillsdale. PJ was 21; taking campus as a fifth year baseball senior. Michigan was hitting peak fall: the smell of campfires, stale beer and opportunity filled the air. Taylor Swift was set to release her 1989 album in a few weeks, which meant Blank Space was playing at frat parties. Some might call it a golden era. Speaking of frats… on this fateful Saturday evening, Lois and PJ both wound up at an infamous bash thrown the first weekend of every school year. Midway through the evening, Lois hit the dance floor and locked eyes with a tall, handsome guy smiling and weaving his way through the crowd. He introduced himself confidently. Lois had never seen him before and instantly assumed he was a freshman. “You seem too happy to be a senior,” she quipped, and walked away. Thus began the chase. Lois played hard to get, pretending she didn’t see PJ between classes and blushing as she took his breakfast order at the on-campus cafe where she worked. But her crush grew over time and soon enough, she was asking PJ — then president of the Accounting Club — to tutor her in Accounting 201. In reality, Lois had straight A’s in the course. PJ saw through the Mean Girls act but played along. To PJ, Lois will always be the fiery redhead with a sensitive side; the girl who cried watching Harry Potter on their first date. And PJ’s “too happy” demeanor quickly became Lois's favorite trait. Relentless optimism carried the couple through years of long distance and ultimately landed PJ out in California with Lois - a move they could only dream of at 19 and 21; dancing to angsty pop music and sneaking on to the baseball diamond at night to watch the stars.
