It all started with a dream. On a Monday evening in January of 2014, JJ rested his head and body as he prepared for a classic CNU Tuesday night track workout. Waking up in a cold sweat, JJ dreamed that Logan out sprinted him in their final lap. As their teammates hoisted Logan up, joyfully cheering and celebrating, JJ snapped back to reality with a realization- "Oh please don't ever let me race Logan!" The Tuesday night workout approached and their coach caught word of JJ's premonition. He had to line the two harriers up for one lap of truth. Running like a scared gazelle being chased by a lion, little did JJ and Logan know that one day they will find a way to run into each other's hearts.

Two years after that lap of truth, Logan heard God tell her to write JJ, a simple teammate, a letter. From a distance, Logan noticed that JJ was not the joy-filled spirit that she had seen glimpses of over the past two years. His smile and contagious laugh were absent, he avoided team bonding, and he did not carry himself with confidence but rather with a weight of sadness. Still to this day, JJ believes Logan has an amazing ability to sense how others are feeling.

God just so happened to put JJ and Logan in a psychology class together where their letters took a back seat to spoken conversation during the walks back to their apartments. Once they reached the intersection where the sidewalk would stay straight or bear right, the two would part ways, smiling. One rainy Monday night walk back from class, the two stopped at the intersection like usual. They said a quick goodbye to get out of the rain and into their dry and warm apartments. Something stirred in JJ’s mind and heart though. Feeling brave, nervous beyond belief, yet confident, JJ turned around and called out to Logan! JJ asked Logan if she was free Wednesday night for dinner. Logan quickly responded, YES! The next morning, Logan woke up with feelings of joy, but quickly realized she had a group project on Wednesday night. With a short Thursday to Saturday travel trip for cross country regionals and a long run on Sunday morning, Logan asked JJ if he would like to come to Special Olympics with her Sunday night! For some, this may seem like a curious and rather odd first date idea. For Logan and JJ, it was simply a way to see a part of each other’s heart.

Ever since that first date, Logan and JJ have enjoyed so many wonderful adventures together. From road trips to Rhode Island, Disney World, New Mexico, Arizona, New York, Colorado, Logan and JJ have a shared heart for adventure. From completing triathlons, running marathons, hiking in the mountains, biking and jogging the RVA trails, Logan and JJ have shared a heart for the outdoors. Ever since that first date, Logan and JJ followed their calling to educate and care for the youth. From both receiving their Masters in Teaching, and both educating and molding minds in little Caroline County, VA, Logan and JJ have a shared heart for teaching.

While JJ was still in Grad school and Logan was finishing her first year of teaching kindergarten, that brave, nervous beyond belief, yet confident feeling was stirring in JJ’s heart once again. As he sent the text to Logan, inviting her on a run, JJ was pacing back and forth in his living room, anxiously playing with the ring in his pocket. The two enjoyed a run to Lions Gate Bridge where sunflowers and yet one more letter, from one simple pen-pal to another, were waiting. As Logan began to read the letter, JJ took to his knee.
