DANNY: We met through a mutual friend in Bellingham in 2011. My roommate invited me to a dinner he was hosting. I decided to attend but don't think I actually said a single word to Rachel! RACHEL: We spent a lot of time together in a group of friends sharing meals, playing games, watching movies, and going to Bellingham events. I started looking forward to our conversations and of course really enjoyed teasing him. Eventually, we found it was often just the two of us and that’s when I started feel like something special was going on. DANNY: I remember one time a bunch of us planned to meet up at Ski to Sea, but for one reason or another, everyone had to leave early or couldn’t make it, so by a happy accident, Rachel and I were paired up for the day. We got ice cream cones and I drove her home in my Corvette. RACHEL: After a lot of sweet friendship and secretly crushing on one another, he invited me to a Sounders game. It was just the two of us and I was all nervous and excited because it seemed like a date but I didn't want to assume he felt that way. It was so much fun that I didn't even care too much about how it was SO cold outside! DANNY: I got front row tickets to a Sounders game and asked her to go with me. I was kind of nervous she would think it was a date but I also considered bringing flowers so I think I knew it was basically a date. She was so set on getting hot cocoa after the game, I thought it must be because she really likes cocoa, but later learned she was just really cold. RACHEL: And the rest is pretty much history! Since then we have been through a lot together, living in Bellingham, then for a couple years we had primarily only weekends together when I went back to school and we were even farther apart after I got my first occupational therapy job. We are so excited to start this new chapter of our lives together and so thankful for the amazing friends and family that have supported and loved us through our years together!
DANNY: We had picked out Rachel's engagement ring together (FYI: we did a great job and her ring is incredible!) so this meant she knew the proposal was coming. I tried my best to keep the when and how as much of a secret as possible. On July 6, 2019, I invited her on a picnic dinner after work. We went to one of our favorite spots on a hillside at Bowman Bay State Park overlooking the Deception Pass Bridge. After dinner, I pulled out a carton of Ben & Jerry's ice cream ("Tonight Dough" for those of you that are curious) from the cooler I carried with us on the hike. When she opened the carton, she thankfully saw the "Will you marry me?" message I had written on the inside of the lid. At this point, I got down on one knee and forgot every word of the proposal I had practiced on my 3 hour drive to Anacortes. Thankfully, the parts I was able to recall were good enough to get the main points across and for Rachel to agree to marry me! Wahoo!
