How We Met

The First Day of Law School

During the first class of the first day of law school, Liz sat next to Tom. Tom had his headphones on, focusing on reviewing the reading material. Liz attempted to make small talk. Tom attempted to ignore her. Eventually, Tom realized that Liz was not trying to steal his reading notes, and they became friends and study partners. This was the start of something great.

The Proposal

Mountain Top High

Liz and Tom love to hike. Every year, they hike on New Years Day to celebrate nature and the start of the new year. On January 1, 2019, Liz and Tom planned to hike in the Columbia Gorge in Oregon-- near where Liz grew up. Liz had been waiting to take Tom hiking in the gorge for the past few years, but due to weather and the Eagle Creek Fire, they had not been able to hike there. However, the park service finally reopened one of Liz's favorite hikes--Devil's Rest--two weeks prior to their annual New Years Day hike. So she opted to show Tom her favorite hike in one of the most beautiful places on earth. That morning, Tom & Liz set out from the Multnomah Falls trailhead and promptly headed up the trail. Liz was completely oblivious and had made a couple jokes about Tom proposing. She had even stated that she would know "when he would propose, because [she] knew him so well." (She had no idea that the ring was in his pocket.) As they reached the top of their hike, they plunked down for lunch on a giant rock that jutted out over the gorge. As they finished their lunch, Liz was chatting and eating some potato chips, when Tom quietly took the bag of potato chips from Liz's hands. Liz was slightly irritated (because she loves potato chips) and decided to stand up and get warm. As she stood and looked over the gorge, Tom (who was sitting behind her) got on one knee and waited for her to turn around. Liz turned around and thought he needed some help getting up. As Liz attempted to grab his hand and pull him up, Tom began telling Liz the reasons why he loved her. Liz stopped and Tom pulled the ring out of his pocket. Liz finally realized what was happening and began crying. Liz & Tom don't quite remember what happened next (due to tears and the high of the proposal), but rest assured Tom asked Liz to marry him and Liz said yes.

The Elopement & an East Coast Event

Tom and Liz had a nano-wedding (The officiant, the photographer, and just the two of them) on November 1, 2020. They decided that Covid-19 wasn’t going to keep them from marrying. The ceremony happened on the Brooklyn Promenade, on a rainy Sunday morning, followed by a quiet brunch at their favorite brunch spot, Cafe Luluc. It was perfect. Almost a year later, Liz and Tom had a small ceremony and wedding reception in Lenox, Massachusetts, on September 11, 2021. The couple said “I do” (again) in front of family and friends, befor eating cake, drinking champagne, and dancing the night away.
