Flight
FLIGHTS: Lexington is the best city to fly into, though it is a regional airport, so flights can be more pricey. Alternative options include Lousiville, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio, both of which are about an hour and a half drive from Lexington. Keep in mind that if you fly into these other cities, you'll still have to find your way to Lexington, which would likely offset the additional expense of flying into Lexington! Only if you plan to rent a car while here would we recommend not flying into Lexington. If you are driving, your key interstates are I75 and I64. If you are traveling from the Northeast, we recommend the route that takes you through West Virginia, as the scenery is usually much nicer... and also the traffic. GETTING AROUND LEXINGTON: Lexington is very much a driving city, so the best option is either to rent a car or to rely on rideshare companies (Uber and Lyft both operate there). Unfortunately, public transportation is limited. Buses do exist, but we have no city train system. If you would like to rely on buses, it is probably best to find accommodation near Downtown where the bus terminal is and where most routes originate/terminate. GETTING TO THE RECEPTION: The reception itself is at Wildside Winery in neighboring Versailles (pronounce it Vur-sales if you want to sound like a local!), the true horse capital of the world! Driving or taking a rideshare will be the only way to get there!
Travel Note
Lexington is the larger city in the area and will have more options (both hotel and AirBnB). Staying in Versailles is another option if you'd like a smaller town experience! LEXINGTON: Lexington has many options for both hotels and AirBnBs. If you want to be able to walk to restaurants and bars, we would recommend staying closer to downtown/nearer to the University of Kentucky campus. If you plan to drive from Louisville, there are many hotel options that are off of I64 and also accessible to the city. This would include staying in the Hamburg area, which is also close to where Liz's folks live. The one area you may want to avoid is the Woodhill area, which has seen a recent uptick in crime. There is even a castle (yes, a castle) that is very near to the reception site if you want to splurge a bit! More of the stays here are likely to be inns and regular BnBs and many of the AirBnBs seem to be rooms instead of private residences.
