Thank you, thank you, thank you.
New to Baltimore and at the suggestion of her new roommate, Gabriella, Liz downloaded the app Tinder to meet new people and hopefully get a few free drinks/meals. After a couple less than satisfactory dates, Mike and Liz were matched. Despite having the app for quite some time, Mike had never been on a Tinder date because he merely used it as something to pass the time. After quickly discovering they were both from Upstate New York, Mike agreed to watch the Syracuse football team's season opener against Penn State at a local Syracuse bar. The conversation and laughter flowed easily and from watching the football game, Mike brought Liz to Cat's Eye Pub, a bar known for their live music and not much else. Unsure whether or not this was a date or a casual tour of Baltimore for the new girl in town, Mike played it cool and ended their 13 hour day with a hug. Fast forward a week to Liz's birthday, and after an Orioles game and a few celebratory drinks of Jameson, Liz asked Mike, "Are you going to kiss me or what?!" And from there, their love story began!
Moving forward to November of 2017: Mike and Liz spent the year planning and saving for a 10 day trip to Chile to explore glaciers, beaches, wineries, and culture. After exploring Valparaiso, Santiago, Casablanca, and Puerto Natales, they ventured into Torres del Paine National Park for 3 days of hiking, backpacking, and camping. After 2 days of perfect, beautiful weather and views, they were met with cold rain on Day 3. This was the part of the trip Mike had been most excited for because they were going to finally see Los Torres, the crowned-jewel of Chilean Patagonia. However, the cold rain quickly turned into snow as they ascended the mountain and visibility slowly began to disappear. At the half-way point of the hike, they stopped at a small lodge only to learn that Los Torres were closed due to poor visibility. Liz began crying because she felt so sad Mike wasn't going to see the view he had been so excited for and Mike was trying to figure out what to do with the ring in his backpack that he had smuggled into Chile with plans to propose once they reached Los Torres. Disappointed, Liz and Mike sadly decided to begin heading back toward the base and catch an earlier bus back to the town of Puerto Natales. As they left the lodge, Liz decided to take a few pictures of a rushing glacial stream while on a bridge above it. It was during this moment that Mike quickly decided this was his chance! On one knee, on a bridge over rapid water, at the bottom of the world, Mike asked Liz to spend their lives together. It was a very easy yes!! Fun fact: when Mike proposed, he called Liz "mi polola," the Chilean way to say 'my girlfriend' or 'my love.' This is different than all other Spanish-speaking countries, which use 'mi novia.'
Join Mike and Liz as they make their commitment to one another official! (Apparently the house, the dog, and life insurance policy weren't enough for Liz)
