Steer clear of alligators and DO NOT FEED THEM. Feeding them makes them bolder, encourages them to seek out people, and alters their natural diet in an unhealthy way. When this occurs the alligator will have to be removed and put down. Alligators in the Lowcountry can grow up to 12 feet in length and are commonly found in lagoons and creeks. Spring and fall are the best times for viewing as you'll find them regulating their body temperature by sunning themselves on the banks. Alligators are not usually aggressive to humans but can be dangerous if approached or provoked. Be mindful of children and pets around lagoons and creeks. These animals are INCREDIBLY fast. Baby alligators are adorable, but a mother's instinct to protect is fierce. Even if you don't see her, she is close by as their relationship can last up to 3 years. Alligator attacks are rare, but by exercising common sense and caution you shouldn't have any problems.
Palmetto Bluff is rich with wildlife including (but not limited to) alligators, snakes, turtles, white-tailed deer, bobcats, armadillos, and bald eagles. The Palmetto Bluff Conservancy is dedicated to increasing our understanding of the natural and cultural environment of the Lowcountry. Guests may participate in research, tour with the Conservancy or attend lectures.
