Lisa lived with Scott, Brian’s fraternity brother, during sophomore year at Purdue. One day, right after showering and putting on mismatched flannel, Lisa was swiffering her apartment floor. Scott walked in with a friend after eating at Boiler Market. This friend just so happened to be the infamous ‘Brian Cooley’ who Scott had previously raved about for being a great friend. Whether it was the fresh smell of shampoo or the mismatched flannel, or maybe the beers from Boiler Market that clouded Brian’s judgement, Brian was instantly intrigued by this strange individual. For some reason, after this meeting, Brian and Scott began to hang out more often at Lisa’s apartment as opposed to their fraternity, Beta House. A friendship started to form but it wasn’t until Lisa made Brian breakfast for dinner that their love for French toast brought them to realize that this was more than just a friendship - but the start of their love story.
Lisa had planned a birthday getaway to the White River Canoe Company for the last weekend of August, however a friend’s last minute wedding plans bumped the Indy adventure to a later weekend in September. The day was spent with Lisa, Brian and some of their closest friends soaking up the summer sun out on kayaks. Luckily for Lisa, her best friend Sara planted the idea in her head that later in the day they should take some pictures because of the beautiful scenery. Lisa- always a lover of pictures- decided that it would be best to actually shower and put make up on for the evening, even though they were just going to be hanging out around the campfire. As Lisa was dragging her feet with the ‘getting ready process’, Brian grew impatient and told her that they were all waiting to start playing a game. When Lisa finally got outside, Matt, Brian’s brother, began to explain a game in which someone needed to be blindfolded. Surprise, surprise - Lisa was first up to be blindfolded. Lisa was spun around a few times and then instructed to take the blindfold off. Brian was down on his knee and Lisa’s face was pure confusion - he had got her good! When Brian finally said, “Will you marry me?”, Lisa squeaked “Yes!” After they embraced, Lisa turned around to see that her mom and brother - who had not been there earlier in the day - had been snuck into the backyard to surprise her. The night was spent toasting and celebrating the newly engaged couple and there was even a private firework show. Brian pulled off the ultimate surprise for the surprise queen.
