The Venue

The Round Top Festival Institute was founded in 1971 by world-renowned concert pianist James Dick and is an internationally acclaimed music institute for music study, research, and performance. Festival Hill is its 210-acre campus, home to major music performance facilities, historic houses, extensive gardens, parks, and nature preserves. The Edythe Bates Old Chapel was originally built in La Grange in 1883 and was used for worship until it was sold to the Round Top Festival Institute in 1994. That year, the chapel was dismantled and moved to the Festival Institute campus, where the sanctuary was extensively restored and transformed into a venue for chamber music rehearsals, concerts, organ recitals, and as a lecture hall. Inside the chapel are two historic pipe organs, built in 1835 and 1864, one of which is the oldest built American organ in use in Texas.
