About a 20-minute drive away at elevations of 6,500' to 8,000', the Lakes Basin Recreation Area is home to over 40 natural alpine lakes and 11,000 acres of wilderness, streams and trails including the Pacific Crest Trail. Gold Lake is easily accessible from the Highway or hike to a few of the Alpine lakes close by: Snake Lake or Rock Lake. Sand Pond is a great swimming hole and Lower Sardine Lake has breathtaking views of the Sierra Buttes.
Rich in history, this State Park was once a bustling Mining town. Visit the Museum, hike around the old ski resort just past the town of Johnsville, visit Eureka Lake or take a swim in Jamison Creek.
