How We Ended Up Here

We first met at a mutual friend’s birthday party. When we were introduced, I remember thinking he was handsome, but there wasn’t some big, dramatic spark—just a quiet awareness. We exchanged a few polite words, maybe a smile or two, and before we knew it the night was over and life simply carried on. Three months later, we ended up at another friend’s after-party. Something about it felt oddly familiar. We were once again in the same room, surrounded by the same kind of laughter, music, and chaos. And still… we barely spoke. Looking back, it almost feels funny—like two people gently circling the same spaces, crossing paths again and again, but never quite bumping into each other. Then, two months after that, something shifted. Alvin sent a message through our friends asking me to call him. It was unexpected. Simple. Direct. I remember going back and forth for days before dialing his number, not knowing that such a small action would quietly change everything. That first phone call led to a met up and we talked for hours about everything and nothing. What started as casual conversation flowed effortlessly into something deeper. We talked about work, about family, about random memories from childhood. We laughed more than I expected. There was no awkwardness, no searching for topics. It felt easy—like we had skipped past the small talk and landed somewhere real. Our first date was at a Mexican Restaurant and all we did was laugh. And then it became a pattern. For months, after long days at work, we would meet and just talk. No grand plans. No extravagant dates. Just conversations. Sometimes about big dreams and future plans. Sometimes about nothing at all. The kind of nothing that somehow means everything when you’re with the right person. Some people fall in love in a single dramatic moment. Ours unfolded quietly—over missed chances, one brave message, and countless conversations after work. What began as two people barely speaking at a party slowly turned into something steady, intentional, and real. And looking back now, I’m almost grateful for the silence at the beginning—because when we finally started talking, we never wanted to stop
