In Bucerias, the official currency is the Mexican peso. While some establishments do accept credit and debit cards, cash is often preferred, so it’s a good idea to have pesos on hand. There’s no need to exchange currency before arriving—simply use your debit card to withdraw pesos from an ATM. You’ll find ATMs at the airport, grocery stores, in the town center, and conveniently located near the hotel. When withdrawing money, be sure to “decline the conversion” option to get your bank’s exchange rate, which is typically more favorable than the one offered by the ATM. The current exchange rate is approximately 19.5 pesos to 1 USD. It's also important to note that paying in USD is generally not recommended in Mexico, as most businesses prefer pesos and may offer unfavorable exchange rates.
Bucerias is located about 20 minutes north of the Puerto Vallarta Airport, and there are several transportation options to get you there. Private Transportation: You can pre-arrange a private transportation service for a more convenient and seamless experience. If you'd like recommendations or help with booking, feel free to reach out. Taxi: Upon exiting customs at the airport, you'll find a designated taxi area with many drivers available. You can arrange a ride at the glass windows located inside the airport. Uber: Uber operates in this area and works just like it does in other countries. However, due to local regulations, Uber drivers are not permitted to pick up passengers directly at the airport. To use Uber, simply exit the airport, walk left, and cross the pedestrian bridge to the other side of the highway, where you can easily meet your driver. Each option is reliable, and it ultimately depends on your preference for convenience or cost.
Bucerias is a very walkable town, and we personally walk almost everywhere. For those who prefer not to walk or want to explore beyond Bucerias, Uber is a convenient option and works just like it does at home—simply use the app to request a ride. There are also golf carts/mopeds available for rent if interested. If you’re traveling with a larger group or want something more personalized, private transportation services are also available and can be arranged in advance. We’re happy to help organize this for you if needed—just let us know!
The wedding will be held in early summer, nearing the start of the rainy season in Bucerias. While rain is unlikely at this time, if it does occur, it’s typically brief and happens in the evening or overnight. Expect hot and humid weather during the day, with mostly sunny skies, making it perfect for enjoying the beach and outdoor activities. Just be prepared for the heat!
Bucerias, along with the entire state of Nayarit, is considered one of the safest places to travel in Mexico. We’ve lived in Mexico for two years and have always felt just as safe here as we do anywhere else. As with any destination, it’s important to use common sense—keep an eye on your belongings, and try to stick with a buddy if you're out at night. Fanny packs and crossbody bags are excellent hands-free options for keeping your valuables secure while you explore.
While the tap water in Bucerias is generally safe for basic use like brushing your teeth (we’ve used it without any issues), both locals and visitors typically opt to drink filtered water. You can easily purchase large jugs of filtered water at convenience stores for about a dollar. If you're staying at the hotel we've reserved, each room will come with a jug of filtered water upon your arrival and will be replenished throughout your stay. As for ice, there's no need to worry—ice in drinks is made from filtered water. If you have any concerns about water during your visit, feel free to reach out, and we’ll be happy to assist.
Much like in the U.S., in Mexico, it is customary to tip service workers in restaurants, hotels, and Ubers. The standard tip is 10% of the bill, but you can give more or less depending on the quality of service. Tipping is not required, but it is appreciated.
