How we met

It was the first month of college in August 2014, the kind of late-summer day filled with new schedules, unfamiliar faces, and the quiet hope that something meaningful might be waiting just around the corner. In an English class at Moraine Valley, two students who had never spoken before found themselves paired together for an icebreaker assignment. The task was simple: interview each other and write an essay. But neither of them knew they were really being asked to begin the first chapter of their own story. What started as a classroom exercise quickly turned into something more. Between questions and shared laughs, they moved past the awkwardness of being strangers. They weren’t just gathering details for a paper anymore — they were noticing the way conversation came easily, the comfort that felt surprisingly natural, and a spark of connection neither of them had expected to find in a random class pairing. Somewhere between “What’s your major?” and “Tell me about yourself,” two lives quietly began to intertwine. An assignment meant to learn about each other became the reason they never forgot each other. But their story was never meant to be rushed. It would take seven years — seven years of growing, changing, and becoming the people they were meant to be — before that first classroom conversation turned into their first real date. And when it finally did, it didn’t feel like a beginning at all, but like a continuation of something that had been patiently waiting for the right moment. And in a room full of students, during an ordinary icebreaker on an ordinary August day, they unknowingly started a love story that would last far beyond the semester — a story that would lead them here, to forever.
