Promise me tomorrow?

April 2021

The first time they met was during a prophetic game at our Discipleship Training School (DTS) at Youth with a Mission (YWAM) in Kona, Hawaii. The students were given pieces of paper with the names of other students written on the back. All were supposed to ask God for words of knowledge and encouragement for the unknown person, and then deliver them to each other afterwards. To her dismay, the first thing Grace heard was "curly-haired cutie", and she REFUSED to write it down. She was sure she heard wrong, and was not going to be the girl who flirted on week one of DTS! Grace felt a nudge to write it anyway (telling herself she'd erase it after receiving another word) but as soon as she was obedient she saw other pictures and words for this person. When time was up, she went to deliver the letter, still with curly-haired cutie on the top! To her horror, the name on the back was a boy's: Dominic Sauer (definitely a curly-haired cutie). It quite likely was the most awkwardly delivered prophetic word in history... she gave the word through blushed cheeks and before waiting for a reply... ran away! To Dominic's credit, he went and found her later that day. He told her, since she had been in such a hurry to leave, he didn't get a chance to tell her how much the letter had meant to him! Afterwards, the two became good friends, sharing morning work duty at 5 am throughout the school! Following DTS, Dominic visited some friends from Kona, and on his way back to Germany, stopped back on the island to bookend his trip. It was during this time back on the island that the two spent a lot of time together, leaving both wondering what the other was thinking most of the time. ;) On the final turn into the airport, Dominic opened his mouth to say, "I can't promise you tomorrow, but I have to let you know how I feel." Thus beginning the conversation of long distance, coming to the conclusion that if the two were ever both back on the island, they could talk about us again. Then he flew off for a year. Throughout that year we talked all the time, becoming even better friends. Friends and family can tell you when Grace assured them that the two were "just friends", she tended to receive an unconvinced "okayyyyyy"! At one point, while Dominic was in Israel, Grace was in Jordan with her students. It was so good to be in the same time zone! Shortly after the trips in the Middle East ended, Dominic reached out to Grace asking if she could sign off on his English test, for an upper-level course with YWAM. Grace's heart beat faster when she asked, "Where are you planning on doing your school?" "Well, I'd be coming to Kona, in the fall." And that was one of our best phone calls yet :) It wasn't long after he came back to the island that we began dating, and he even flew home to Minnesota for Christmas, just weeks into the relationship! Fast-forward to June 11th, when Dominic promised Grace all of his tomorrows and asked her to marry him. Best question ever.

For all the days along the way
