One of the original 13 American colonies, Cecil Calvert founded the Maryland colony in 1632. The first colonists to live in this area were Puritans from Virginia, on the banks of the James River. Toward the end of the Revolutionary War, Annapolis served as capital to the newly forming American nation when the Continental Congress met in Annapolis from November 26, 1783 to August 19, 1784. When the founders of the United States Naval Academy were looking for a suitable location, the Secretary of the Navy decided to move it to a 'healthy & secluded location to rescue the midshipmen from the temptations and distractions connected with with a large populous city".
