I hate to lead this section with this but I know it will be a common question. -Colombia currently requires all non-residents to have been vaccinated to enter the country. You will need to bring your vaccine card with you. The rules are that it is required to enter most restaurants, bars, etc. but they accept a photo, so I would just take a picture on your photo and leave your vaccine card with your passport in your hotel room. -We will be offering COVID tests for all guests that need it to fly back to the US. I will provide more details but we have scheduled a block of time on Sunday late afternoon/early evening at the Sofitel for all guests to get an Antigen test. Results should be back within 4 hours. Right now, it looks like the majority of guests that are flying back to the US will be leaving by 3:30PM on Monday, so our testing window will likely be 4-6PM the night before (Sunday). Anyone leaving outside this 24 hour window we can also get set up with a test as well.
Yes, you need a valid passport. Colombia requires that your passports are valid 6 months post travel. ***This means that your passport expiration date must be dated after September 12, 2022 (or later, depending on your departure date from Cartagena)***
It is hot, so pack accordingly. Almost all places have A/C but in the sun it can get very warm.
Yes. Many places have Wifi to connect to, but you will need to contact your cell phone provider to see if you need an international plan for your time in Colombia. This will be helpful to meet up with people around town, request Ubers, get directions, etc.
Not exactly. There are plenty of taxis and your hotel will always be able to arrange one for you. It is very unlikely you will need to take a taxi to any place within the Walled City- everything is walkable. If you want to go to Getsemani or the beach, you will likely need a taxi.
Yes, definitely. Taxis are everywhere. If there is a meter make sure it starts at the correct point. Remember that tipping drivers is not expected. It is always recommended to call for a taxi, or to ask your hotel/restaurant to call one for you.
Some places accept U.S. dollars, but for the most part dollars are not widely accepted in Cartagena. While the exchange rate fluctuates, one U.S. dollar is roughly equivalent to 4,000 Colombian pesos. It is a good idea to download an app to your phone so you can quickly punch the COP value in and see what it costs in US dollars, rather than try to calculate it in your head. My Currency Converter is a popular one and it is offered in the App Store. In order to receive the best exchange rates, withdraw Colombian pesos from an ATM in Cartagena or exchange your currency at a bank in the United States. Airports tend to offer less favorable exchange rates.
Tipping is not widely common or expected at restaurants, but if you feel you received good service, by all means, leave one. Note that at mid-range or top-end restaurants, you’ll be asked for a voluntary 10%, which you can accept or decline. Most people pay this and the staff will share the tip. If you received great service you can leave an additional tip just for the waiter.
