A cozy and cute downtown, and well worth a walk around. It's a little hilly, but there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to pop into. Definitely worth a visit if you're in town, and many of our recommendations are there.
Independence Trail East
Great easy trail accessible to children and elderly just outside of town.
Sierra Discovery Trail
A great, easy, and informational hike on a well maintained trail highlighting the local flora and fauna. Highly recommended for young children. About 40 minutes out of Nevada City. Take Hwy 20 N towards Reno, and exit at Bowman Lake Rd. Follow road for about a mile until you see signs on your left.
Emerald Pools
Also on Bowman Lake Rd. (Hwy 20 north until Bowman Lake Rd. exit; about 40 minutes out of town). Fantastic string of swimming holes in granite valley. A great place to spend the day sunbathing, swimming, and exploring. A very popular locals spot. Follow Bowman Lake Rd. until you reach bridge over river (not a snow run-off canal), and you will see a small parking lot on the right. Trail leads from parking lot to several pools, but there are many more to explore in the immediate area. The is additional parking road parking just past the small main lot, but get there early and bring a cooler!
Tahoe National Forest
About 40 minutes up Hwy 20 N, and you'll come to Tahoe National Forest. Endless trails, lakes, and camping. To get the most access, consider renting a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
Deer creek tribute trailhead
Serene is the word here. Easy trail along the creek, and simply stunning beauty.
Wheyward Girl Creamery
Fantastic local spot featuring local, domestic, and international cheeses.
