We first met in fifth grade when Ethan transferred to Centerburg and I was assigned as his official “get-to-know-the-school” buddy. (Clearly, I took the job very seriously.) We hit it off instantly and became inseparable. By our sophomore year of high school, we realized we were more than just best friends and the rest is history. From homecoming court to prom king and queen, plus a “Best Couple” nomination or two, our high-school love story has only grown stronger. Now, the legacy that started all those years ago is finally coming full circle when we say “I do” in July 2027.
Ethan and I boarded a 5 a.m. bus from Glasgow to Edinburgh for what I believed was a simple day of sightseeing. What I didn’t know was that Ethan had secretly packed an engagement ring in the backpack he insisted was extremely important to bring along (suspicious behavior, confirmed). We wandered the beautiful city and toured Edinburgh Castle, where Ethan planned to propose until the sea of tourists sent him into a quiet spiral and forced a last-minute pivot. That’s when he discovered that one of the hop-on, hop-off bus stops was King Arthur’s Seat, a massive mountain overlooking the entire city. Important context: I have knee issues and hiking is not my idea of romance. Somewhere on the climb, out of pure love and exhaustion, I warned him, “If you’re not proposing at the top, I’m going to be furious.” Meanwhile, he was hiking with a ring in his backpack! We finally reached the top, took in the view, snapped some photos and then Ethan got down on one knee. In complete shock, I immediately yelled “NO!” (meaning “No way, this cannot be happening!” and absolutely not “No, I don’t want to marry you.”) After some very quick clarification and a lot of happy tears, I said yes to forever with my favorite person. On the way back down, glowing and engaged, we hopped back on the bus, took a celebratory photo, and realized we hadn’t actually climbed King Arthur’s Seat at all, we climbed the smaller mountain next to it. But honestly? Wrong mountain, right moment, forever kind of love.
