Relationship Questions and Answers

June 29, 2021 - August 27, 2022 and Beyond

How did you meet? Liam: In person at Sarah Chewning's apartment. See Sarah for further details. Mary B: I was invited to lunch with the young adults from Sarah's church. I recognized four or five of the people in the group from way back. (Some people accuse me of forgetting who Nathan was, but I’ll fight to my last day that I remembered him exactly, but was taken aback that he was unchanged) I met Liam there, but learned soon afterwards that he was thinking about moving away. We probably only said two words to each other that day, but I was still bummed that I wouldn't get to know him at all. When did you first realize you liked the other person? Liam: See answer one. Mary B: My sisters kept asking if I liked any of the guys in the young adult group, and my standard response was that I liked all my new friends, but my thoughts went straight to Liam every time they asked. What were the first attributes/characteristics you noticed in the other person? Liam: I appreciate that she forgot who Nathan was. She is also very thoughtful and measured. She doesn’t put up with my occasional winging and melodrama which is much appreciated. She encourages me to be better through her conduct rather than words which has helped me to grow in service and hospitality throughout this past year. Mary B: He’s been a strong teammate as long as I've known him, and an equally strong competitor. I admire how firm he is in his convictions and his intentionality in forming good habits. What did your first date look like/what did you do? Liam: It looked like me tripping over myself while extremely uncomfortable and Mary B attempting to teach me to dance. See Nate and Kacia La Tour for further details. (The music was good at least.) Mary B: We went on a double date to the greek theatre on campus with my brother to teach Liam swing dancing. He made good progress during the lesson and learned the steps well. We were entertained by watching Nate and Kacia practice aerials, then the four of us started walking back to my house. Liam and I slipped away to browse through the art building on our own. We held hands, explored campus, climbed a tree on the front lawn of Old Main, and talked about his time overseas. What events took place that lead to your engagement? Liam: Well first I talked to her, then her dad, then her, then we broke up, then I talked to her, then her dad, then her, then her dad, then got a ring, then talked to her, then we were engaged. Mary B: We agreed that the minimum amount of time required for us to plan a wedding was three months and that we’d like to get married in August, so I started getting a little paranoid in May. Then while we were visiting Dallas for a friend’s wedding, I caught a glance of a ring box in his backpack. We had plans to celebrate our six-month anniversary with a hike after the trip, which was when I assumed he would propose. The hike ended up being longer than we both expected, but the overlook was beautiful and an ideal spot for him to propose. I said yes before his knee actually touched the ground. What were some embarrassing/memorable moments of your relationship? Liam: Dancing. Attempting to ask Mary B out. Mary B: When he first asked me out, he didn't use the word “date” so I thought it was a casual invitation. I had recently picked up my second part-time job, and genuinely wasn't sure if I had any free time to date, so I told him I was busier than ever and wasn't sure if I could. He thought it was a soft no, but I didn't want to discourage him from trying again after I adjusted to my work schedule, so I told him that getting ice cream together might be fun. Then our Bible study started and I realized halfway through the night that I had not given him a yes or no answer. My favorite quote from our relationship: “My love language is reformed theology.” - Liam
