How We Got Engaged

December 20, 2025

Sarah loves Rotary Lights, the annual Christmas light display in Riverside Park in La Crosse. Though Lewis had shown Sarah the ring and resized it to her finger, he waited months to get down on a knee in front of the “Will You Marry Me?” lights. Lewis had inquired how to turn the lights on but to no avail. Sarah invited Lewis to walk through the lights on Friday, December 19th. Lewis insisted on asking volunteers for help to get the lights on, so Sarah could send a prank photo to her friends. After asking two sets of volunteers, we were directed to the volunteer trailer and learned there was a remote and someone already had it. Lewis settled for getting on the list for the next day. Saturday, December 20th was Lewis’s Christmas adventure day for Sarah. After a day outside at Sparta’s Winter Market, they returned to Rotary Lights. Sarah couldn’t believe that they needed to come back just for a prank. Lewis had to admit he was seriously going to propose and gave up the surprise. Also it was colder and windier than the day before and Sarah got salt in her eye twice. She reluctantly came along. With the remote in hand and a volunteer filming, Lewis proposed using Sarah’s full name, so she knew he was serious. Her response? “I guess so. I’m not taking my glove off.” The wait at Lovechild was long, so instead of prosecco, they got cocktails and velvet Elvis dip with chips at the Starlite.
