Flight
If the first stop on your journey is Scotland, this is probably the best airport to fly into. Once you arrive you can get a 15 minute taxi, bus or tram to the city center.
Flight
If you wanted to check out London before heading to Scotland there are a few airports to choose from (Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick). Once you spend a few days there you can grab the train (www.nationalrail.com/ www.trainline.com) or a short flight to Edinburgh (with Easyjet or Ryanair). As baggage is extra with these domestic journeys, the train might be a better option and is definitely more scenic! If you are flying into London, remember you can choose a multi-destination flight and fly home from Edinburgh.
Travel Note
Via public transport there are a few ways to get to St. Andrews: Train: If you want to take the train (50mins journey) you can grab it from Haymarket or Edinburgh Waverly Station to Leuchars. One you arrive at Leuchars Station you can grab a 10min bus or a taxi into St. Andrews. A taxi to St Andrews is around $15 so If you are in a group it makes definitely makes more sense to do this. Bus: If you want to take the bus you can grab it from the Edinburgh Bus Station and it will take you directly into St. Andrews. The journey takes about 1 hour 45mins and again is a nice scenic route but we prefer taking the train.
Travel Note
From our experience the best website to purchase flights from is kayak.com or skyscanner.com. From Michigan, there are several airports you can fly out of - Detroit tends to be the more expensive but you can sometimes find really good deals. More often than not, we usually grab a flight out of Windsor, Toronto or Chicago.
