Mark and I met online in 2016 just six weeks before I was moving across the world to Japan. Mark was enlisted in the Navy as Rescue Swimmer and I was a Navy Nurse, we were breaking the rules going out on a date. We had talked about a week before actually meeting and in my mind, there was nothing to lose. I was moving anyways we can at least have a good night meeting someone new. Mark will say it was my shoes that immediately locked it down for him. I was wearing maroon vans ( the Hokie in me). Both being from Virginia we decided to have BBQ on our first date since we both missed it so much. It was the first date I had been on in years that when we ended the night I thought " wow I really liked him." Our relationship has been nothing but challenging. I left six weeks later to move to Japan and he told me he wanted to come visit me in Japan, but there was no let's make this work or are we in a relationship talk. I cried the whole plane ride thinking, yeah sure he will visit, everyone says that. I thought nothing was going to happen between us. Daily facetimes later, meeting in Hawaii , Mark visiting Japan, me visiting California. We survived our first 2 years together long distance. Mark FINALLY proposed in January 2020 on top of Heavenly ski Mountain while we were skiing with my parents. I wanted him to propose all week, and each day passed , nothing! On our last day skiing we were going towards this beautiful overlook that we stop at all the time. Mark had headed over there while I stopped to help a little girl who had fallen and couldn't uncross her skis to get back. Mark didn't think I was going to make it over there, I had no idea he was going over there to propose. It was a Heavenly spot for an epic proposal.
