We usually "ring" in the New Year (no pun intended) with our loved ones. This year however, we said we wanted to do something different. We decided to venture off into the city for dinner and hoped to catch a glimpse of the fireworks at Battery Park. Now, people always ask if I knew it was coming. The funny thing is that Lek and I had gone for a walk about a week or so prior and he had brought up marriage. Lek's exact words during our walk were, "I just don't think I am ready." Yup-cue the violins...I was devastated. --New Year's Eve-- My sister calls me and demands that she wants to treat me to a manicure. Now, let me make this clear, If Lek and I hadn't had that talk before hand, I would have definitely thought something was up; but since we did, I had no expectations whatsoever about a proposal. Like a normal "date night," I got ready and out the door we went. --Dinner & Fireworks-- We had dinner over looking The Hudson & Battery Park. We finished at around 11:45 pm and decided to leave the restaurant so that we could pick a good spot to see the fireworks. We saw what appeared to be an observation deck and decided to climb up since it was vacant. Only to find out that no one was there because the trees were blocking the view! So back down the steps we went. By this point it was six minutes until midnight. We decided to go back to the starting point of our walk because there was a dock we thought would be a good spot to see the fireworks. Only, instead of walking, we were basically running. We made it to the dock with less than thirty seconds to spare. We laughed and BOOM! The first of the fireworks ignited. It was midnight. We shared a midnight kiss and I turned away to continue watching the fireworks. Without me realizing, Lek got on one knee and asked me the easiest question I have ever answered. There were no photographers, no cliché balloons, it was just us; and for a split second the world around us stood still... It was perfect.
