How We Met

University of Maryland, Spring 2012 Mechanics Class

We unknowingly sat next to each other in Mechanics I class, and we were told to form groups of four for the class project. Our goal: build a wooden beam to break at exactly 500 lbs. Our group's square beam broke within 10 lbs of the goal and we won! This great triumph led to an even greater friendship; we've been besties ever since!

The Proposal *Her Side*

Lincoln Memorial, Thursday, April 18

Watch it here! https://youtu.be/1bQ1HzW3Fqk I thought we were just meeting friends for happy hour downtown. We received a text to meet our friends at the Lincoln Memorial, so we could play tourist first. Cool, I thought, it was a gorgeous day outside. We get there, and we were looking for our friends. We found Thomas (shout out for the awesome pictures), and I noticed he had his nice camera. Still oblivious, I said that's such a great idea; I should have brought mine. I realized I didn't see Ashley, the other friend we were meeting, so I started looking for her in the crowd. At this point, Josh is kneeling at the edge of the reflecting pool. Thomas tries to get me to turn around to look at Josh. I spin around, and it looks like he is tying his shoe. Dismissively, I spin back to Thomas. I end up spinning a total of three times as my concern is finding Ashley, not whatever Josh is doing. Thomas finally forces my attention to Josh. DAAHH! Now I realize what is going on. I immediately say "YES, OBVIOUSLY! LET ME SEE IT!" This is the point in the video I am flapping my arms like a bird. Josh snapped, nicely, "I get to speak!" Fine. He continued to tell me the last four years have been the best of his life and that he has never felt more comfortable with anyone. Maybe he said more but that is all I heard; I was too excited! I said yes again and got the bling. Shout out to Sasha for getting this special moment on video! We are so very excited to celebrate with all of you :)

The Proposal *His Side*

Lincoln Memorial, Thursday, April 18

I told Kelly early in the week that we should go to happy hour on Thursday and then convinced Sasha and Bruno to help me trick her into going to the national mall for happy hour without expecting anything. In theory, this wouldn't be an easy sell because although we are a short distance from the mall and monuments, we don't typically make the trip, especially not on a Thursday. To make matters even more difficult, Kelly knew that I had ordered the ring two weeks prior. However, even I, her fiance, underestimated how absolutely oblivious Kelly actually is. We easily convinced her to come to the mall and I dropped to one knee to propose to my best friend. I knelt there while EVERYONE, with the exception of Kelly, turned to look at me and began cheering. She spun around three times wondering why everyone was cheering before finally realizing what was going on. She looked down at me and I thought "this is my time", I had everything that I wanted to say prepared and before the first word could leave my lips, she shouted with sass "YES OBVIOUSLY, LET ME SEE IT." I guess you can say I got an early introduction to marriage.
