David and Caroline first met when attending a college bible study in Weaverville, NC in 2013. They only met each other for a minute or two, but an impression was made. They didn't reconnect for another four years.

On December 17, 2017, David decided to ask Caroline to marry him. He had actually made this decision weeks before, but wanted to wait until he got back from a two week long disaster relief trip to Puerto Rico.
