Before their first date, unbeknownst to Jonathan and Lebeka, they only live 5 minutes from each other in Kansas City, a place with big city vibes and a small-town charm. They are strangers until a serendipitous dating app brings them together for the first time. Jonathan, a blue-eyed man with a sweet smile, born and raised in Richmond, Virginia meets Lebeka, a spunky, fun-loving woman from the Bronx, NY. They shared long walks, lounging on a lake in kayaks, long theological debates, and visiting their favorite comic books stores. Little did they know that these first dates of fun adventures in Kansas City would grow to a deep love that would last a lifetime. What made their love grow, you may ask? Perhaps it was Lebeka’s delight to learn that Jonathan has the taste buds of a Korean old man and loves her favorite foods, Yuk Ge Jang and Mat Dong San. Or perhaps it was sharing in a fun cartoon-watching celebration of Batman Day after learning that they both deemed Batman their favorite childhood superhero. Maybe it was Lebeka's nickname Baby Fox given to her by friends because of her mischievous and playful spirit and the surprise of learning that Jonathan's last name is Fox. Jonathan didn’t know at the time, but Lebeka had fox slippers, a fox journal, and a fox pillowcase! In light of all of the great things, it really was Jonathan’s faithful and steady heart that captivated Lebeka. And Lebeka’s spunkiness, spontaneity, and deep love for God that caused Jonathan to fall in love.
Jonathan prepares a bowl of engagement … ring pops (!), as he gets ready for the ultimate surprise proposal for his fiancé-to-be. Their engagement ring (the real one!), had been delayed for months due to COVID-19. Since they both share a fondness for the late 90’s, these were the perfect rings for an engagement day in this futuristic sounding year of 2020. Sweet, playful, and nostalgic of childhood. On an ordinary, warm and sunny Saturday in June, Lebeka is (as always :) ambitiously juggling multiple tasks and has a little bit of this to do and a little bit of that to finish. She wasn’t aware that this was going to be the day that she would be proposed to; a day that she would remember forever. She was taking Jonathan on her errands and running in all directions and taking them farther away from Jonathan’s engagement destination, Shawnee Mission Park. Spontaneous and fun-loving Lebeka was a little perplexed as to why Jonathan seemed to be inflexible about their day, needing to arrive at Shawnee Mission Park by a certain deadline. Even with the day’s share of redirections, Jonathan knew it would make for the perfect surprise. Jonathan was finally able to get Lebeka to the park (on time!). They were nearing a bridge that was decorated with pink and gold streamers, white balloons, and glittery paper flowers. Lebeka said, "Oh look! It looks like someone just got engaged!" They walked by more decorations that were photos of the mysterious and newly engaged couple and Lebeka thought to herself, Wow, it’s great that there is another mixed-race couple that looks just like them! Jonathan smiled and asked her to take a closer look at the photos. Lebeka finally realized it was THEM! To her surprise, he got down on one knee and said, “Lebeka, will you marry me?” And Lebeka said “YES!” They were joined by many friends and family in the park and friends from out of state on Zoom to celebrate the newly engaged couple and sharing in the bowl of engagement ring pops!
