Question

How should I get to the ceremony and reception?

Answer

There will be a shuttle leaving from the Intercontinental Hotel to the ceremony venue, which is available for everyone regardless of if you are staying at the Intercontinental. Otherwise, we recommend utilizing Uber/Lyft or public transportation to 1911 N Stockton Dr to get to the ceremony at the Honeycomb. To get to the reception, it is a 5 minute walk through the park to Cafe Brauer. There is limited street parking near the venue, though the Lincoln Park Zoo parking lot is available for $35-40.

Question

I’ve never been to a Jewish wedding before! What should I expect?

Answer

A Jewish wedding is a beautiful blend of tradition, faith, and celebration. The ceremony takes place under a floral chuppah representing a home filled with family and friends. During the ceremony, you will see the Ketubah (marriage contract), hear blessings for the couple, witness the exchanging of rings, and partake in the breaking of the glass. When the glass is broken, it is customary to yell Mazel Tov! At the reception, there will be a key dance called the Hora! In the hora, two or three concentric circles are formed around the couple and family. Friend lock arms in the circles, and the circles spin in opposite directions. Meanwhile, in the middle of it all, various friends and family take turns joining the couple in celebration. Eventually, the couple and the couple's parents are hoisted in chairs! Everyone (Jewish and non-Jewish) should participate! Please see example video linked below. https://www.tiktok.com/@talgudel/video/7136186245058776362?lang=en

We have reserved blocks of rooms at the InterContinental and Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk hotels in downtown Chicago, as well as the Carleton in Oak Park for those who would like to stay closer to the Jenks family. Please note that Oak Park is ~30-45 minutes from downtown Chicago and the venue. There are also many other hotels and airbnbs at a variety of price points throughout the city.
