Our Story

It all began during the spring semester of freshman year at Indiana University. Lea had just joined Alpha Phi and was starting to meet the fraternity crowd when a boy named Mike Rotolo followed her on Instagram. After seeing the name Rotolo and spotting the handsome Italian face in the profile picture, Lea was instantly intrigued. When she noticed they shared a mutual friend, Connor Theis, she didn’t waste any time. She insisted Connor introduce them at the first Alpha Phi and Pi Kappa Phi pair. And so, in the dark Pi Kapps basement, music booming, air thick with sweat, feet sticking to floors lined with Twisted Tea, Lea and Mike met for the first time. Mike flashed a confident smile and greeted her with a now-iconic line: “How we doin’, baby?” Lea was immediately taken by his easy charm and quiet confidence. Over the next several years, Mike continued to win her over, not just with his good looks, but with his humor, endearing nature, and fun-loving spirit. The two shared countless memories throughout college: cooking dinners together, binge-watching their favorite TV shows, spending long days studying, and of course, making the most of Bloomington’s local spots. Afternoons on the Brothers patio, evenings at The Tap, late nights at Kilroy’s, and mornings spent recovering at Fat Dan’s. Through it all, what stood out most was their shared love for family. Both Mike and Lea found not only love with each other, but a home within one another’s families, each welcoming the other with open arms. Their favorite moments together, even now, are often the simple ones spent surrounded by the people (and little ones!) they love most.

The Proposal

Everyone knew Lea had been ready for a proposal for quite some time, but she and Mike had always imagined fall 2025 as the perfect time for an engagement. So when Mike got down on one knee this past June, Lea was completely, but joyfully, caught off guard. The two were preparing to close on their new home in Downers Grove and had escaped to Marco Island for a weekend trip Mike had gifted Lea for her birthday. Lea was curious what Mike had planned for their weekend away, until just a few days before when he asked if she could take care of making the dinner reservations, yet another sign that nothing was going down this trip. Then, the evening of Friday, June 13th, Mike suggested they grab a quick pre-dinner drink at a tiki bar just a short walk down the beach. Lea, ever practical, suggested walking in front of the buildings instead of the shoreline, worried about the 90-degree heat and knowing Mike “runs warm.” But Mike insisted the walk would be short and worth it. Distracted by home-buying logistics, Lea agreed, completely unaware of what was about to happen. As they walked along the sand, Mike suddenly stopped, took a step back, and got down on one knee. Pulling a slim, flat case from his pocket, designed to disguise the ring box, he opened it to reveal the most beautiful ring Lea had ever seen. Her mind raced: “What is that? A portable charger? Where did you get that ring? Did you ask my dad? Does my family know?” To her amazement, a photographer appeared, capturing every moment as Lea smiled from ear to ear. When she asked if her family knew, Mike assured her they did and that they would be celebrating once they returned from the trip. Still in disbelief, they continued toward the tiki bar, where Lea got the surprise of her life: all their nieces and nephews came running out holding congratulatory posters, followed by the rest of their families. Every single one of them had flown out to Marco Island to celebrate. It was an unforgettable weekend filled with love and laughter. To this day, Lea is still in awe that Mike pulled off such a thoughtful, detailed, and perfectly executed surprise, and she couldn’t imagine a more meaningful start to their next chapter together.
