How We Met

September 29, 2019

Sabrina: We met the modern way, online on the Plenty of Fish (POF) dating site. Matt messaged me first. We started chatting early on in the week and he invited me out to dinner that weekend. Our first date was on September 29, 2019 at a Japanese restaurant, Tomikawa, near where I lived in Irvine at the time. The most memorable and somewhat embarrassing part of the date was that the lace on the front of my dress got caught on the zipper of my purse and after struggling with it for awhile I had no choice but to tear my pretty dress just so I could be free. Matt's recollection of that date may be somewhat different as the incident got me very flustered. Matthew: I was a little anxious since I had to rush over directly after Church. I also distictly remember the dress having caught and was equally flustered trying to help but being unable to without damaging the dress. After being freed from her purse, we came upon my favorite part of the evening getting boba. We were able to continue getting to know each other and even shared a comfortable silence instead of a usual awkward one. This helped make up my mind in continuing to see Sabrina.

Proposal Story

September 26, 2020

We decided to celebrate our One Year Anniversary a few days early. Matt unofficially proposed to me through a handwritten and heartfelt card. Though he had not actually written the question, "Will you marry me?" nor did he say it out-loud. We went to a nice nearby park with a scenic lake with my dog Ichigo and spent a few hours there already planning the details of our wedding. When we got back to his parent's house for dinner Matt told them of our engagement but his mom asked, "Did he have a ring or get down on one knee?" I said, "No." So then his mom exclaimed, "That it doesn't count! Matt do it properly!" This then leads to his Official Proposal and Engagement Party on 10/10/2020 @ 10:10 am with him meeting my mom for the first time and a small gathering of Matt's relatives.

Thoughts

Sabrina: It may sound odd but when I found out that Matt was lactose intolerant, flat-footed, shared the same love for cute furry animals, and taste for spicy food I think I liked him more. It was something we could bond over. I appreciate Matt's expansive knowledge of all things cinema, sense of humor, maturity, weirdness, thoughtfulness, and most importantly his love for God. I can't wait to start our lives together officially! Matthew: What she said but better. All kidding aside, I found it absolutely fascinating when she told me of her decision to become a teacher. That she always framed her passion for serving others but decided she wanted to instead work with children exemplifies to me someone caring, patient and God-fearing.
