Beautiful trail rated difficult. This route includes just about everything a hiker could possibly ask for in a hike! Aspen meadows, stream crossings, waterfalls, alpine lakes, and wildflowers. It's definitely a challenging hike with the distance and elevation gained, but the hard work is totally worth it for the jaw-dropping views.
This is rated difficult. This is a beautiful trail in the San Juan National Forest with awesome views all the way up. This loop can be very difficult if you aren’t used to the elevation gain, as there is plenty of climbing along this route. Throughout your journey through the Ice Lake Basin, you’ll pass waterfalls, meandering creeks, and one of the most beautifully colored lakes you will ever see! The stunning views and unique landscape on this trip make every bit of climbing worth the effort.
Columbine Lake Trail #509 in San Juan National Forest is a difficult and steep trail with 16 discernible switchbacks but it’s worth the effort. The trail flattens out at the basin below Columbine Lake and once you arrive you’re in for a real treat. The water is gorgeous. In addition to scenic views of the mountains visitors will also be treated to an abundance of colorful wildflowers along the route. Camping is permitted but the alpine meadow is fragile, so tread lightly and move your tent often. You can access the lake via snowshoe year round, but there are avalanches in the area so use extreme caution. Check in with the Forest Service before snowshoeing during winter months. Fishing is also available at the lake and is rated good for brook trout.
Moderate difficulty trail. We have completed this trail and comes highly recommended. Ouray's Perimeter Trail, a unique five miler, features the surrounding cliffs and mountains. It begins across from the Ouray Visitors' Center on the east side of US 550. (Please wear boots or sturdy shoes on this mountain trail!) Parking space is available behind the Visitor's Center.
