We first met in high school. Our love story didn’t start with an initial spark. Rather it was a slow burn to get to where we are today and we couldn’t be happier. After 16 years of knowing each other, 6 years of living together, and a beautiful little girl, the time is right for us to officially tie the knot.
It might have been us being in the age of technology, or all of the computer/phone junk Miles has all over the house, or him being home all day with the baby, or a combination of the three, but he tried to record the proposal from 4 different angles (including inside the Christmas tree). Tanessa Rae came in first with a small old box and gave it to Laurie. The ring inside cost less than the box, but Laurie held a straight face. Miles jokingly started to get down on one knee and Laurie's "straight-faced" turned into a "he better not" face most likely due to the ugly ring and poor presentation. Miles asked Laurie if she noticed anything different about the tree. After about 2min., Ms. OCD finally notices the new ornament. It was a silver gift box that read "You are my present and my future". As Laurie opened the box, smiling from ear-to-ear, her eyebrows high and her eyes sparkling, Miles dropped to one knee. He repeated the quote engraved on the ornament and asked, "Will you do me the honor of being my wife?"
I know Laurie will talk about a piggy back ride on South St., or a trip to NY, or even our time in Mexico, but not I. When I sit back and think about all the time we've spent together, a lot comes to mind. But the most memorable moments, the ones that brought me the most joy were in the car. Excuse me, driving around in the car. Talking to someone who opened up her soul and allowed me to be Me.
Without question or doubt, my favorite date is actually the first time Miles and I went out together. It was my 16th birthday and since all my friends already had plans, I called him up asking if he was busy. He immediately said without hesitation, "I'll take you out for your birthday." Well, who would've thought he'd have a place to go and a whole day planned? He took me to South Street in Philadelphia for some shopping and dinner. But instead of telling you the whole experience, I'll tell you the most memorable part. He parks the car and we get out and he says, "hop on". I looked at him, "is he really serious, he's asking to give me a piggy-back ride?" Well, giddy me jumps on without hesitation. I could go on and on about how amazing that day was especially since it was so spur of the moment. He made it a 16th birthday worth remembering.
