Like so many couples now, we met online. But not in the expected places; no E-harmony here. We met through writing alternative histories and got to be fast friends over a mutual love of words-- writing, reading, song lyrics, all of it- as well as our shared love of history and historic places/sites. Then other similarities started to stick out. Despite distance, we grew ever closer. After more than a year, we met in person as friends, and had what we now call our "week long first date". We made the leap from best of friends to partners and haven't looked back since. Now we only look forward to a remarkable future.
One thing that is important to both of us is history, and projects that bring attention to a town's history and are public art are just up our alley. In many parts of Portland, there are iron rings set into cement curbing. These were used in the nineteenth and part of the early 20th century to tether horses in the street when Portland was still growing. A long running project here is The Portland Horse Project. In order to draw attention to these small but significant parts of Portland's past, people tie small horses to the rings. To read more and see photos, see https://www.facebook.com/PortlandHorseProject/. As many do, we saw one of these horses and stumbled on the origins and story and are quite captivated by the idea! We would love your help in contributing to this project. Please bring a plastic horse/zebra/cartoon character/anything (Portland Horse Project doesn't discriminate, as their Facebook site shows ) with you that you don't mind leaving behind. Over the course of the year from our wedding day to our first anniversary, we will put your contribution up on one of these historic rings, Sharpie branded with its place of origin, and a photo added to Portland Horse Project's Facebook page.
