Things To Do

As one of our favorite cities, Edinburgh has a lot to explore. Below are a few ideas to get you started with your travel planning!
Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle

Castlehill, Scotland EH1 2NG, United Kingdom
+44 131 225 9846

Perched above the city, it’s impossible to miss Edinburgh Castle. You can visit inside, but we’ve found it equally fun (and free) to just walk around the terrace outside the entrance.

Arthur's Seat

Arthur's Seat

Scotland EH8 8AZ, United Kingdom

An extinct volcano in the middle of the city, Arthur’s Seat offers unparalleled views of the Old Town and the distant landscape of the highlands. It’s only about a 30-minute hike to the top, and is beautiful for sunrise or sunset.

Live like royalty by visiting the Palace of Holyrood, where the Queen stays on her visits to Edinburgh. This site is best paired with a hike up Arthur’s Seat. Be sure to check out the Abbey.

Calton Hill

With some of the best views of the city, and an easier climb than Arthur’s Seat, try to visit during sunrise or sunset.

Victoria Street

Victoria Street

Victoria Street, Scotland EH1, United Kingdom

Visit the street that inspired Diagon Alley in Harry Potter! The street has colorful buildings, cute shops, vintage bookshops, and fun bars. Our ceremony venue is on this street, so it would be perfect to visit on Tuesday afternoon.

Be sure to check out IJ Mellis Cheesemonger, Coco chocolatier, Stockbridge Tap, and the Scran & Scrallie.

Dean Village

Dean Village

Dean Path, Scotland EH4 3AY, United Kingdom

Follow the Water of Leith to Dean Village to explore stunning architecture and gardens. Stop into Stockbridge before or after for coffee, lunch, or some shopping.

Real Mary King's Close

Real Mary King's Close

We haven’t been, but hear that a tour of this Old Town Street narrated by historical figures is worth a visit. For the Thompson clan, think Vintage Voices underground. Advanced booking online is recommended.

While you should certainly sample some Scottish staples (like haggis, neeps, and tatties), the U.K. has some of the best Indian food around! We’ll be having a family dinner at Dishoom, but encourage everyone to add at least one Indian restaurant to their itinerary. Mother India’s Cafe is also well-reviewed.

Mary's Milk Bar
